Bob began officiating basketball games in 1969. It did not take long for his peers, both referees and coaches, to recognize his ability as an outstanding basketball referee. Until he retired in the early 1980's, Bob refereed in virtually every major basketball event in Manitoba at the high school, university, senior men's, and international levels.

On the national scene, he was a referee at the Canadian Senior Men's Championships three times, twice handling the final; he officiated three times at the University Men's Championships.

As an administrator, Bob served the Manitoba Basketball Officials' Association as president, assigning officer, rating officer, and clinician.
