Biography
Larry Marquardson dedicated over 35 years to basketball as a teacher-coach. He first taught and coached at Sisler and Earl Grey Schools, but his longest tenure was at Sargent Park Junior High where, under his leadership, the model for a consistently successful and competitive junior high program was developed. In 2012, he was the recipient of the Mike Spack Award and he was a three-time Manitoba Coach-of-the Year, 1983-84, 1998-99 and 2009-10. He coached over 20 junior and senior girls teams to City Conference championships and was a founding member of the Winnipeg Invitational Tournament (WIT). His work with grass-roots athletes was best exemplified by his initiatinga developmental league for those unable to make the school teams. Furthermore, his greatest contribution may have been his insistence on strong academics and proper behaviour with all school athletes. These high standards for both athletic and academic achievement led to many very good athletes and very strong students coming out of junior high school.
