Biography

Isabel (Duncan) Thomson was a true pioneer in women’s sports. She was very proud to be born, go to school and live all her life in the Elmwood area. She was an incredible athlete who played 17 years of junior and senior basketball with the Altomahs and the Winnipeg Pegs, 1938 to 1955, where she was one of the finest female basketball players of her era. She represented Manitoba six times at the Western Canadian championships and was a league all-star and team captain many times.

In addition to her long career as a player, Isabel was the President of the Greater Winnipeg Senior Women’s Basketball League for many years and the Vice President of the Canadian Amateur Basketball Association (CABA) – now Canada Basketball. She organized many fundraising activities to support women’s basketball in a time when there was limited interest in female sport.
