The Brandon University Bobcats are best known for winning four CIAU /CIS National Championships. However, the foundation for these championships was, in many ways, laid by four outstanding BU teams of the early 1980s. At the national championship tournament, the Bobcats captured a silver medal in 1980, a bronze in 1982, another bronze in 1983 and a silver in 1984, before breaking through with their first national crown in 1987. In that era, getting out of GPAC was a huge challenge and winning any medal at nationals was an even more difficult task. As it was, these Bobcat teams not only accomplished both things, but they ultimately set the table for what was to come.
The Glenboro School Panthers Varsity Girls dominated MHSAA ‘A’ basketball for almost a decade capturing five provincial championships. The small school of about only 230 students (K-12) took on all comers all over Manitoba during their amazing run of excellence. After winning their Zone 13, the Panthers went on to an unprecedented run starting in 2004 in Treherne where they defeated the hometown team in the championship final 77-63. In 2005, they defeated Strathclair 61-43, in 2006, in Carmen, they won by downing Strathclair again, this time by a score of 54-41, in 2007 they won their fourth consecutive championship by edging Strathclair 48-47, and in 2009, they upset top-seeded Treherne 42-40. Their quest for six straight championships was ended in 2008, where they captured a bronze medal after losing a close semi-final game. The roar of the Panthers was undoubtedly heard all across Manitoba.

"A" Boys Provincial Champions - 3 time
The early 1990s featured a mini-dynasty at the ‘A’ level for Varsity Boys. The Hawks from St. Laurent School won three MHSAA Provincial Championships. In 1992, playing in Deloraine, the Hawks defeated Rossburn. In 1993, they downed Pinawa in Brandon at the MHSAA Jamboree, and in 1995, they beat Steinbach Christian School in Steinbach. The teams were known for their relentless, hard-nosed style of play, which carried them to be champions.

Neelin Spartans 2024 "AAA" Girls Provincial Champions - 8 time
To say that the Neelin Varsity Girls dominated high school ‘AAA’ basketball in the late 1990s and early 2000s would be a major understatement. In a 10-year period, the teams won an amazing eight provincial championships. The girls each learned their roles and the value of each player’s role to the team. Everyone contributed to the team and to every victory in different ways. This defined Spartan Basketball.
