A graduate of Tantramar Regional High School in Sackville, New Brunswick in 1982, Jen played at the University of New Brunswick for two years, and was a first-team All-Canadian in 1984.
Transferring to the University of Manitoba in 1985, Jen was Great Plains Athletic Conference All-Star and a second-team All-Canadian in 1987. In 1988, jointly with another player, she was named GPAC's Most Valuable Player (MVP), and was a first-team All-Canadian that same year.
A key player on the U of M team that won the Canadian Inter-University Athletic Union (CIAU) national championship in 1988, Jen was a tournament All-Star.
