Biography



A 1985 graduate of Westwood Collegiate in Winnipeg, Joey was a member of the Brandon University Bobcats in 1989, 1990, and 1991. In 1986 and 1987, he had played at the University of Winnipeg.

A member of the Brandon Bobcats team that became national university champions in 1989, Joey was the tournament Most Valuable Player (MVP). He was a first-team All-Canadian in 1987, 1990 and 1991. At the 1990 Canadian Inter-University Athletic Union championship, he was a tournament All-Star. Joey was also Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) All-Star in 1987, 1989, 1990, and 1991.

Joey was a member of the Canadian national teams that represented Canada at two World Championships in Toronto in 1994 and in Athens, Greece in 1996, and at two World Student Games in Sheffield, England in 1992, and in Duisburg, Germany in 1996 winning a silver medal. 

After his stint with the Canadian National team, Joey continued his basketball career as a professional in Europe. He played for Marathon Oil and in money tournaments where he hit a $10,000 shot at the buzzer. In 1995, he played in Lithuania where he was the MVP at the all star game and league MVP along with winning the 3-point contest. He also played in Spain where he was the championship tournament MVP, and in France, Sweden and Austria where he was the MVP and led his team to the championship at 47 years of age. He once hit 17 three-pointers in one game and was an all-star at least once in all countries where he played.
