Harvey Lipkin and Al Rimer, the founders of Harv-Al Sportswear, were instrumental in fostering the growth of amateur basketball across Manitoba. Their unwavering support and sponsorship extended to all levels of the sport, including grassroots programs, high school leagues, and senior competitions. Through their business, they provided essential financial assistance, equipment, and logistical support to teams and organizations, ensuring that basketball continued to thrive in the province.
Harv-Al Sportswear played a pivotal role in the development of the Manitoba Amateur Basketball Association (MABA), helping to establish the foundation for organized amateur basketball in the region. Their contributions were not just financial but also deeply rooted in community engagement. They recognized the importance of coaching development and played a key role in supporting the creation of the Manitoba Coaches Association. For several years, Harv-Al funded the association’s annual dinner, an event that brought together the province’s top coaches, officials, and basketball leaders to celebrate the game’s growth. Additionally, they generously provided the trophies for two of Manitoba basketball’s most prestigious coaching honours—the Mike Spack and Carl Ridd Awards.
Beyond supporting governing bodies and coaching initiatives, Lipkin and Rimer worked closely with high school programs, helping teams with travel expenses and other financial needs. Their commitment extended to both junior and senior basketball leagues, where they provided uniforms, sponsorships, and logistical support that allowed teams to compete at a higher level. Harvey Lipkin was personally involved as a manager for some of the top junior and senior teams in Manitoba, offering his expertise and leadership to help these teams succeed.
Recognizing the importance of youth engagement in basketball, Harv-Al Sportswear also organized the "Little Dribblers" program, introducing young boys and girls to the fundamentals of the sport. This initiative provided early skill development opportunities and instilled a love for basketball in countless children, many of whom went on to play at competitive levels.
Through their tireless efforts, Harvey Lipkin and Al Rimer left a lasting impact on Manitoba basketball. Their generosity, leadership, and passion for the game helped shape the basketball landscape in the province, creating opportunities for players, coaches, and teams at all levels. Their legacy continues to be felt in the ongoing growth of the sport in Manitoba today.
